In Short
Morocco’s administrative capital sits at the junction between the Atlantic Ocean and the Bou Regreg River, a 21st metropolis built over centuries of history. Its strategic location made it a military stronghold for the Romans, a full-blown Amazigh (“Berber”) fortress in the 12th century, a hub for the Barbary pirates in the 17th century, and, until recently, the base of the U.S. Air Force, thus earning it the name “Rabat,” the fortified city. As a result of its powerful history, this former imperial city has plenty of monuments that are well-worth visiting, both ancient and modern. And, even if its cosmopolitanism makes Rabat not the most representative of Moroccan culture, it has become the center of various social and artistic movements. In short, Rabat is not the number one destination in Morocco, but it’s still got a vibrant life and lots to see, not to mention, its central positioning among Casablanca, Meknes, Marrakech, and Tangiers, along with its excellent transportation system, make it a highly convenient stopover. Highlights Among Rabat’s historical sites are the UNESCO Kasbah of the Udayas, the Rabat Archaeological Museum, and the Mohammed V Mausoleum, which, besides being the resting place of the last two kings, is also considered an architectural masterpiece. Add to these the UNESCO Hassan Tower, the Challah Necropolis, and the Royal palace, and you’ve got more than a light historical tour. Among the various art galleries around the city, is L’appartement 22, an independent, gallery collective with a year-round contemporary art exhibit. Also, as the capital, Rabat is home to the Embassies and Parliament building. |
